Are Business cards still relevant?

Someone mentioned to me the other day that they see no need for business cards if one has a cell phone or in particular an iphone!

Here is my thoughts on that…

Having a smart phone such as a blackberry or iphone is a dramatic improvement from the early cell phones that forced us to re-enter all our contacts each time we switched devices, manually re-entering everyone and making our deletes of outdated or unwanted contacts laboriously.  Applications such as Bump for the iphone or microsoft tags and QRcodes make getting a persons information into our device much easier however is that really where business contacts should be?

I know that in my personal life I love having my friends and family information at my fingertips on my phone but do I want hundreds of work related contacts with me at all times. Sharing these contacts and grouping these contacts becomes an issue as well as contacting any of them with my now revealed cell number makes be accessible when I don’t want to be.

I of course do have professional relationships that warrant the information to be on my portable device but when I am at work looking for something in particular, I consult my business card folder and thumb to the appropriate group and then looking at the business card which tells me about the service along with graphic design and images that tell me something about the person or companies asthetic, I decide who to call.

Business cards may not have the cache that they once had but they are still relevant in this day and age.

Do you want your bank representitive to bump his info to you, or your mechanic or your house painter?

Business cards can be an very effective visual representation of you. Data on your phone at this point is just that.
